How to create a coupon?

Created by Ross Ballard, Modified on Wed, 19 Aug at 4:21 PM by Ross Ballard

Follow the steps below to create a new coupon code on your site.

1. Log in to WordPress

Go to your website's WordPress login page.

This is usually:

yourwebsite.co.uk/wp-admin

Enter your username or email address and password, then click Log In.

2. Open the Coupons Section

From the WordPress dashboard, go to:

Marketing → Coupons

Click Add new coupon.

3. Create Your Coupon Code

In the Coupon code box, enter the code you want customers to use.

For example:

SAVE10

You can also add a description underneath for your own reference, such as:

10% off promotion

4. Choose the Discount Type

Under Coupon data → General, select the type of discount you want to offer.

Choose from:

  • Percentage discount – for example, 10% off
  • Fixed cart discount – for example, £10 off the whole order
  • Fixed product discount – for example, £5 off a particular product

Enter the discount amount in the Coupon amount box.

For example, for 10% off, enter:

10

Do not enter the % or £ symbol.

5. Set Any Restrictions

Click the Usage restriction tab if you need to control when the coupon can be used.

You can set things such as:

  • Minimum spend
  • Maximum spend
  • Specific products
  • Specific product categories
  • Products or categories that should be excluded
  • Whether the coupon can be used alongside another coupon
  • Whether sale items should be excluded

Leave these blank if the coupon should apply to all eligible orders.

6. Set Usage Limits

Click the Usage limits tab if you want to limit how many times the coupon can be used.

You can set:

  • Usage limit per coupon – total number of times the code can be used
  • Usage limit per user – number of times each customer can use it

For example, enter 1 under Usage limit per user if each customer should only be able to use the code once.

7. Set an Expiry Date

Go back to the General tab and enter a Coupon expiry date if the offer should end on a particular date.

Leave this blank if the coupon should remain active until you manually remove it.

8. Publish the Coupon

Once all of the settings are correct, click Publish on the right-hand side of the page.

The coupon is now live and ready for customers to use.

Example

To create a simple 10% off coupon:

Coupon code: SAVE10
Discount type: Percentage discount
Coupon amount: 10

Click Publish and the code SAVE10 can then be used by customers at checkout.
